Urban Continuity for Connections

This project is an exercise in improving a city through a process of intensification of building and residents and urban continuity.

Acre, a city with enormous potential which is sparsely settled, was chosen as a study case. There is evidence of human settlement in the old city of Acre since 2000 years ago.  In the beginning of the 20th century, an orthogonal grid was built North of the old city. After the establishment of the State of Israel, in 1948, housing projects were built east of the city to define its borders for political reasons. In following years, the space in-between was filled with modernist development that left the city hollow from within.

This projects suggests creating continuity of the urban net to achieve:
1. Connection to the sea shore.
2. Connection to the old city.
3. Connection to other cities.

The intersection between the old and the new cities. The historical ditch serves as a trigger for a new commercial street bordering it, and creates a new touristic attraction. The building typology is characterized by low buildings with large land coverage, to moderate the transition from the old city to the new one.

The proposed plan is based on a slow and gradual change divided into several stages.

Four types of building typologies according to the density of the area and the proximity to the old city.

The city center where the main commercial street meets the beach. An historical British fortress is converted into a public museum and park. The city center is defined with buildings that allow commercial fronts and have an inner block court yard.

The north of the city is less urban and aimed mainly for residency. A park is located in a quite residential  surrounding by the shore.

The historical ditch is converted into a park. the park connects the old city to the new one, using pedestrian bridges and watch towers.
